The Indian Merchants Association of Yokohama (IMAY) was established in 1921 to facilitate and promote trade between India and Japan.

Indian companies have been operating in Yokohama, Japan for more than a century and were engaged primarily in the silk trade in the early days. Thanks to the support of the Japanese Government and in particular the City of Yokohama, the Indians in Japan have survived the two World Wars, the Great Kanto Earth Quake of 1923 and several other disasters and calamities and continue to grow and flourish in Japan.

Today there are more than 16 Indian companies in Yokohama doing business in industries ranging from apparel, textiles, electronics, automobiles, foodstuff, real estate to Information Technology and trade between the two countries continues to increase.

Today, IMAY plays an important role in promoting friendship between India and Japan and a deeper understanding of the rich Indian culture and heritage in Japan.
